The AI Act: A New Era

ARTICLE BY: Marjeta Tušek Jelenc
CATEGORY: Regulatory Compliance

The EU’s AI Act represents the first comprehensive legal framework designed to regulate artificial intelligence across multiple sectors. Its goal is to ensure that AI systems are safe, transparent, and respect fundamental human rights.

The broader implications for the future of AI development are:

Risk-Based Classification – The AI Act classifies AI systems into four categories: minimal, limited, high, and unacceptable risk. High-risk systems will face the strictest regulations to ensure they meet rigorous safety standards.

Transparency – AI providers must offer greater clarity on how their algorithms function, particularly in applications like facial recognition and critical decision-making, fostering trust and accountability.

Compliance and Accountability – Developers must ensure their AI systems comply with EU standards on fairness, accuracy, and cybersecurity, supported by ongoing monitoring and assessments.

Ethical Innovation – The Act is designed to balance innovation with ethical guidelines, promoting AI that benefits society while minimizing harm.

And did you know that AI systems considered an “unacceptable risk,” such as those involving social scoring, will be banned entirely under the AI Act? This demonstrates Europe’s commitment to prioritizing human rights and trust in AI.
